7. A Fate Worse Than Death

Distant Dads:  Was your dad distant, without too much warmth or interest in you? Can you recall just one memory of how he might have revealed his love for you?

Leaving Home: When did you first leave home?  How did it feel to have to make your own choices at last?

Your own children: What advice would you give your young adult children when they first leave home.  Did you do that, or did you keep it to yourself?

6. Early Tumult!

The fish and the dam:  The “law of unintended consequences”. Clean hydroelectric power and its collateral damage to fish.  Are such “developments” eventually going to destroy life itself?

Jobs: Did you have a menial job that you hated but later look back on as a great learning experience?

In your teens…were you separated from others by your family or economic circumstances?  Did this “exclusion” drive you to “succeed”?

5. Lower Case Gourmet

Art or indulgence? Can the balanced association of wine with food be seen as an “art” form or is it a beautifully presented indulgence leading, occasionally, to an addiction?

Mentors: Who was your mentor during your discovery phase who has continued to influence your adult life…and how?

Motivation: Could you, in the upstream later years, offer yourself to a young person as a mentor? If so, what would motivate you to do so?

4. First Love

Preoccupation: First love has a way of taking over ones mind…almost completely. Is this very human Rite Of Passage any different today than it was in your past?

Peer Group: How soon do you recall being concerned about your own peer group’s opinion of you, as an individual…what mattered most?

Ambition: Whose example did you want to follow? If it was a parent, then did you want to do better than they had done?

3. No Longer Alone

Abuse…and imagination: Abuse comes in many forms, some more damaging than others. Is it possible that we “invent” in our pain some “added” events that may not have happened. Do these stories keep the pain alive?

Competition: Is all the measurements of achievement really necessary? When marks (grades) and scores are removed, does achievement suffer…or is there a greater sense of…self-worth?

First Love: What do you remember most about the one you first felt the stirrings of attraction?

2. Acquisition

Appearance and Ownership: How about your very first item of clothing and a prized possession that set you apart from others?

Distant Dads: The Chinook passes a “larger version of himself” coming upstream. Did you have only a passing relationship with your dad? How is it now for your son?

Injustice: Have you tried as hard as you knew how and still failed, even to the point of being punished unjustly? Later on did you back off rather than lose the “race”?

1. The Journey Begins…

1. Memory: Is there an early memory that has shaped your life journey?

2. Encouragement: Could it be that you might encourage a child with a “good word” that they may remember for the rest of their life?

3. Life begins? Is it reasonable to assume that life actually begins when the egg is fertilized? Let us try to set aside any political implications and focus on the issue of life itself. I know it’s hard to do but please try! I’d love to get your input.
