How Does YOUR Garden Grow?

How Does YOUR Garden Grow?

December 3rd, 2010 // 2:46 pm @

I am taking my passion for cooking to a whole new level. For the first time ever, I’ll be growing the food I cook. I hope it has great positive effects, not only on the quality of the meals, but that I’ll be able to take the blessing of producing my own food, and pass it on to my friends, family, and community.

I recently was interviewed by radiotherapyonline.net explaining what more fully what I hope to accomplish, and also have a video below that I hope will inspire you as this journey has inspired me.

Growing and eating one’s own food seems rather strange today, but a scant generation ago it was the norm. The Amish folk do this regularly, and from what I’ve heard and read, do very well. Amish people live longer than we English folk. They farm without modern machinery too.

    Hi Graham,

I have been inspired to grow our own food in the recent months, specifically because of the state of the economy and coming food crisis due to rising fuel prices. However, your mention of growing food to be able to share with your neighbors has hit a cord with me and has given me even more reason to use my time and land to grow food that can feed my own family and others in need.

I live down in the valley between Mt Vernon and La Conner and plan to use this world renowed soil to hopefully grow sustaining food. Now I just need to learn what and how to grow. My green thumb consists of keeping the lawn mowed…

Thank you for your vision and testimony.

    Dear Robert,

Thank you for being one of the first to get the idea of growing enough to share. Our whole area began with folks being good neighbors, now we are in danger of losing such an important ethic. Until 09 I had never grown anything I had cooked. When I did it really transformed my kitchen and my life. Our only secure future is to consider our present neighbors. I’m only 2 seasons ahead of you and very much in the learning curve. You’ll meet some of the most generous and gracious people, it’s the basic culture that gardeners enjoy.

Hi, I’m in the US. I have grown veggies for my family with my mom since I was 8 or so. I can honestly say that it is the most rewarding thing you can do. Good luck and I’ll be watching for ya!

Imagine, if I had begun at your age of 8 in the garden I would now have had 69 years of rewarding fun, I’m trying to keep this new passion going for as long as possible. If you pray please mention my back!

    Hi, Graham!

I fear that I am cursed with a “brown thumb” – whatever I plant invariably dies. My best idea was to plant weeds, and hope a lawn and garden would spring forth. Naturally, the weeds flourished.

We’re located in the high desert of Reno, NV, which has the multiple challenges of a short growing season (late May through mid September), highly acidic soil with little organic matter in it, and a hot, arid climate. I was just getting ready to say “the heck with it” and put in a patio, but you’ve inspired me to give it another go. I’ll let you know how it turns out….

I love this idea! My husband is the gardener in my home. He loves “Square Foot Garden” and now we are getting your book, too! I absolutely love picking from his garden then cooking a meal. It’s amazing the taste difference – organic and right off the vine or right out of the ground. Let’s put it this way, I hated tomatoes until he started growing them. Ripe from the vine… such a treat. And beets… I’m a convert thanks to him.

    Keep writing about it!

Keep watching! On Feb 11 ( God willin’ an the creek don’t rise) we will launch
http://www.eggscartonclub.com. This allows new enthusiasts (like us) to let our new gardens become a blessing to our neighbors…just like it used to be? Graham

    Hi Graham,
I am so excited to begin this program with you! My plants really took off in my back porch “greenhouse” and were lovingly placed in a new garden bed.
But I believe they are outdoors shivering at this point. Can you do something about this silly Washington weather! This is not encouraging my dedication to what is (to me) a new idea! :)
